David Lee has revealed he would jump at the opportunity to become manager of Bolton Wanderers, whilst claiming he is 'embarrassed' by the club's current position.

Lee, who made 199 appearances for Wanderers between 1992 and 1997, has been on the coaching staff at the University of Bolton Stadium since 2008 and currently leads the club's under-23 side in the Professional Development League.

The 51-year-old has been backed by supporters to take on the top job following the departures of previous first-team managers, and with the future of Phil Parkinson very much in the air due to the club's administration status, Lee has revealed the opportunity to lead the senior squad would be too good to turn down.

"Bolton Wanderers is my life," Lee told BBC Radio Manchester. "I love the football club from top to bottom and I love the people who work there. I love the supporters and I love the town.

"No disrespect to the managers who have been there or the manager that's there now - if someone threw me a lifeline and said 'David, do you want to be Bolton Wanderers manager?', I think you know the answer.

"I'd love to have the opportunity.

"We are in a desperate situation at this moment in time. It breaks my heart and I know it breaks a lot of people's hearts to see where we are.

"Hopefully, with the people there now, we can bring it back to how Bolton Wanderers should be.

"I always go back to the supporters. They are fantastic, they are passionate, they love the club and they would do anything to see us back where we should be.

"They've stuck with us throughout the good times and the bad times. They deserve some passion, some enthusiasm and something to fight for.

"At the moment, we're a little bit embarrassed of where we are.

"We don't want to be there but we are in that position and let's hope one day we can take them on and become how we used to be and how everybody remembers Bolton Wanderers."
