Kevin Davies has revealed he was part of a consortium which launched a bid to purchase Bolton Wanderers prior to Ken Anderson's arrival at the club.

Davies, who played for Wanderers between 2003 and 2013, recently became a qualified Sporting Director after completing the Master of Sport Directorship course at Manchester Metropolitan University.

That wasn't the case back in 2016, however, when he saw a business plan rejected by the EFL, causing his proposed takeover to collapse.

The 42-year-old, who recently moved away from the local area after a 15-year stay, admits he was in discussions with former teammate Stelios Giannakopoulos at the time and still holds regret over his failure to remain involved with the Trotters.

"Ever since Eddie Davies put the club up for sale, Bolton have needed to get the right owner in," Davies told Training Ground Guru.

"Not just someone with money, but someone with heart and soul and passion for the club.

"I was in talks with Stelios Giannakopoulos and a company in North America and did quite a bit of work and spoke to the club on their behalf.

"Unfortunately, the business plan wasn't acceptable to the EFL at the time, so it fizzled out.

"I knew how the club operated, I understood the fans and had been captain there for five years and a player for 10.

"I'd always hoped my football career would end at Bolton and that I'd progress to a coaching role, which didn't transpire. I'd seen this as another way of helping the club.

"I'm open minded about what I'll do next and whatever it is I know I'll throw myself into it."
