Josh Vela has confirmed he is to leave Bolton when his contract expires at the end of June.

Vela, who joined Wanderers at the age of nine, progressed through the club's academy before signing professional forms in March 2011.

He made his senior debut as a substitute in a Premier League clash against Swansea City in April 2012, before going on to make a total of 182 appearances over a seven-year spell that saw him feature in three divisions under the guidance of four different permanent managers.

Without doubt, Vela's best season in a Wanderers shirt was during their 2016/17 League One campaign, where his return of 10 goals from 53 outings helped guide the club to promotion as runners-up.

He featured 31 times as Phil Parkinson's side retained their Championship status last season, but played just 19 times as they were relegated this term - the most recent of which was in defeat to Norwich City in February.

With speculation of a bust-up with the current boss refusing to go away and his existing deal up over the summer, the 25-year-old has decided the time is right to seek a new challenge as he looks to get a fledgling career back on track.

Taking to social media to thank supporters, Vela said: "Just a quick announcement I will be leaving Bolton Wanderers when my contract expires. I had 17 glorious years there, came all through the academy and then eventually went on to play in the first team, was an absolute privilege to play for the club.

"Loved every second of it, thank you to the fans for the support over the years through good and bad times. No matter what anybody says I always gave 100 per cent in that shirt in every game I played.

"Just want to thank all the staff for all their effort that they have put in over the years, and I know how it feels to them when a lad from the academy goes on to play in the first team, I've made some friends for life at the club and will always be a supporter of that club.

"It's hard for me to leave the club that I have been at for 17 years, but the time has come for a new challenge for me and my family. This season hasn't gone to plan but I'm sure the club will get back to where it belongs, I've enjoyed the ups and downs - a lot more ups.

"But that's football. I want to wish everyone at the club, all the very best for the future, especially the fans because they deserve it for the continued support. All the very best, Josh Vela."
