Prospective Bolton owner Laurence Bassini will meet with the EFL at 7pm on Tuesday, where a decision on his proposed takeover is expected to be made.
Almost two weeks have passed since it was announced Wanderers were to become 'debt free' after Bassini struck a deal with outgoing chairman Ken Anderson to take control of his 94.5% shareholding in the club.
The duo have since become embroiled in a public spat, with Anderson making the ultimatum that documents must be signed, sealed and delivered by close of business on Monday or he will begin to seek alternative options.
That deadline has since passed but reports suggest Anderson has agreed to extend the cut-off due to Bassini's meeting, the outcome of which will be of huge significance with regards to the future direction of negotiations.
Should Bassini gain approval from the EFL, he will have succeeded in providing adequate proof of funds.
However, rejection by the league body will almost certainly result in Wanderers being placed into administration, meaning they will begin next season with a 12-point deduction.
It is understood, though, that several parties would become interested in taking the club out of that predicament, including the Football Ventures (Whites) Limited group - consisting of Sharon Brittan, Michael James and Jeff Thomas - but potentially without front runner Parminder Basran.
