Brentford chief executive Jon Varney says he will do all he can to compensate supporters who did or were due to travel to Bolton on Saturday.

The Bees had been due to face Wanderers at the University of Bolton Stadium, but their fixture was called off at 10:30pm on Friday evening after the Trotters' first-team squad and staff opted to strike due to the non-payment of March's salaries - which are now 29 days overdue.

A number of visiting fans were pictured at the stadium throughout the day, with some deciding to make the most of their short stay by heading into Manchester or taking in local non-league matches at Chorley and Ashton Town.

Varney expressed his sympathy for those who had purchased tickets and travel and although entry will remain valid for any rearranged fixture, he has vowed to reimburse those who will be unable to make a midweek repeat journey at short notice.

"This is a very unfortunate situation that we have found ourselves in the middle of," Varney told

"I am sure the EFL will investigate thoroughly and will reach a conclusion as soon as they can, but we need to look after our fans.

"I will be working over the coming days to find ways to compensate those who have had their day spoilt by the game being called off, particularly as it will, I'm sure, be difficult for some to get back up to a rearranged fixture at short notice.

"This situation will continue to develop over the coming days.

"We are waiting to hear whether the game will be rearranged and, if so, when. Once we know that we can make decisions on the best way our supporters can be compensated, and by who.

"Almost 400 fans bought from us in advance and I will work with our Ticket Office to assist with refunds for fans that want them.

"I will also be talking to the Supporters' Association about the cost of their coach and what we can do if the game is played this week. I will keep our fans updated."
