John Brooks will referee Friday's Sky Bet Championship fixture between Bolton and Aston Villa at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Wanderers go into the game on the back of a 4-0 defeat at Derby County on Saturday, while Villa were 2-1 winners at home to Bristol City that same afternoon.

Brooks, who will take charge of the game, has officiated 37 matches so far this season - issuing 145 yellow cards and five red.

His most recent outing was on April 13, when he was the man in the middle for Tranmere Rovers' 2-1 victory over Milton Keynes Dons in League Two. The Leicestershire official brandished five yellow cards at Prenton Park, four of which went to members of the losing Dons.

Brooks' last match in charge of Bolton was in August 2018, when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Bristol City in a Championship clash at the University of Bolton Stadium. Eight players were cautioned that afternoon, with Andrew Taylor, Mark Beevers, Josh Vela, Luke Murphy, Gary O'Neil and Adam Le Fondre all having their names taken for the home side.

The last time he refereed a Villa fixture was in November 2018, as they ran out 3-0 winners over Derby County in a Championship encounter at Pride Park. Five players entered the book that evening, including Villa duo John McGinn and Albert Adomah.
