Gudni Bergsson believes Bolton will find a route back to the Premier League, but only if current and future ownership learn from past mistakes.

Bergsson, who made 317 appearances for Wanderers between 1995 and 2003, admits his role as president of the Icelandic Football Association prevents him from becoming too involved but reiterated his affection for the club in a statement provided to the Bolton Wanderers Supporters' Trust.

The statement, read aloud at a Trust meeting on Monday evening, said: "I have been following events at Bolton as closely as possible through my contacts with the Supporters' Trust.

"I'm afraid that I can't get much involved because of my role as president of the Icelandic FA.

"I would, however, like to say the supporters deserve better than the present situation we find our club in.

"It is down to all relevant parties, especially Ken Anderson, to find a solution for the club and their fans.

"It is quite clear that we need new ownership. Any owner should treat a club like Bolton with respect for its history and meaning for supporters, and the community they serve.

"I hope we will learn from the mistakes which have been made and get the right outcome this time, then we can start rebuilding our club.

"If we can have some involvement from supporters in this period of transition, then I can only see that as a positive.

"One thing is certain - Bolton Wanderers will be back competing with the best."
