Phil Parkinson felt Bolton more than matched Middlesbrough and put their 2-0 defeat down to 'carelessness' in defence.

Ashley Fletcher, a former Wanderers youth prospect and pupil at Canon Slade School, netted a first-half brace at the University of Bolton Stadium as Boro ended a run of six consecutive defeats with a routine away victory.

Speaking after the game, Parkinson felt the visitors were handed their goals by sloppy defending, putting his players in the difficult position of chasing a game from two-down.

"It's frustrating for us because Middlesbrough came here on the back of a bad run," Parkinson told

"We gifted them two opportunities in the first half by carelessness.

"When you give a team (opportunities) with the talent they've got - £40million worth at the top of the pitch - they're going to punish you.

"We were right in the game. There wasn't a great deal between the two teams.

"The lads have kept going until the end, trying to do the right things. Nobody hid away from the ball in difficult circumstances, but it is very frustrating that we've given them a huge lift by presenting those two chances.

"We're going to clear the training ground and give everybody a break. We'll then come back in on Thursday and review what we're going to do going into the weekend's game."
