Bolton will assess Luca Connell ahead of Tuesday's game at Birmingham City, after he was forced off in Saturday's defeat at home to Preston North End.

Making only his fifth senior appearance for Wanderers, Connell lasted just 23 minutes before limping off with a calf injury and being replaced by Josh Vela.

Speaking after the game, manager Phil Parkinson expressed sympathy for the 17-year-old and believes the Trotters missed the presence of the highly-rated playmaker as they slipped to yet another loss at the University of Bolton Stadium.

"It was a blow for us because he's a player with real quality," Parkinson told bwfc.co.uk. "He's shown that in the games he's played so far.

"But it was a high-octane Lancashire derby. He's a young lad an unfortunately he's strained his calf."
