Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has admitted there was truth to speculation linking him with a move for Bolton loanee Joe Williams during the January transfer window.

Williams, who is on a season-long loan with Wanderers from Everton, has made 19 appearances so far this season but hasn't featured since the turn of the year due to an ongoing thigh injury.

The 22-year-old was heavily linked with a permanent switch to Ashton Gate early in the window, in a week leading up to City's Championship clash against the Trotters.

Johnson has confirmed he was exploring the possibility of a deal with Williams' parent club, which would have seen his loan at Bolton cut short, but the injury sustained by the midfielder any potential transfer to be put on the back-burner.

"Joe Williams is a good young player that plays for Everton," Johnson told the Bristol Post.

"If he was available at that point then we would have had an interest.

"But he was at Bolton anyway and at that point he got an injury. In fact, I think he's still injured now if I'm right but I'm not sure.

"I like Joe Williams. He's a good player. But that doesn't necessarily mean that he would have come in and jumped ahead of anybody that we've got.

"And also he's not our player. I like a lot of players but I can't have them all."
