Lee Bowyer has revealed Erhun Oztumer was set to sign for Charlton Athletic on deadline day, only for Bolton to pull the plug after failing to land Ched Evans.

Oztumer, who joined Wanderers on a free transfer from Walsall last June, has failed to have the impact he desired during his brief time at the club so far, starting just eight times all season before falling down the pecking order at the University of Bolton Stadium.

A prolific figure in League One during his time at Walsall, Oztumer had travelled to The Valley last Thursday but Addicks boss Bowyer admitted it was a case of wrong-timing as the Trotters declined to sign off on the move.

"I feel sorry for the lad," Bowyer told South London Press. "He was at the ground to sign the papers.

"Because there was no number nine available, we went for the best number 10 who scores goals.

"In the last couple of seasons he has scored 15 goals and got 10 assists in both of them.

"We had a back-up plan which all went pear-shaped. It was reliant on Bolton bringing in Ched Evans - who then scored against us at the weekend!

"The kid was gutted. We had it all lined up but it didn't go our way."
