Phil Parkinson was delighted with Bolton's response to their defeat at Hull City, after thrashing Walsall to book their place in round four of the FA Cup.

Having lost 6-0 at the KCOM Stadium on New Year's Day, Wanderers were sluggish inside the opening 45 minutes against the Saddlers - who took a 1-0 lead into the half-time interval.

Parkinson's side, inspired by a Josh Magennis hat-trick, bounced back after the restart to claim a 5-2 win and the Trotters boss admitted a double substitution at the break was pivotal to the turnaround.

"We're very pleased to get through and get ourselves going following the defeat to Hull City," Parkinson told bwfc.co.uk.

"We showed great character after going a goal behind in the first half.

"I thought a lot of the approach play was good in the first 45 minutes, but I thought we needed to change it at half time. We did that and it is a terrific win for us.

"We got knocked today being down at half time and showed the character that I know the boys have in them.

"We can take a lift from this and, in all honesty, the last two home games were great positives also.

"We had one of our best performances against Stoke and backed it up today.

"We have to draw a line through the Hull defeat and stick to our job, which I thought we did today in abundance."
