Former Stoke City midfielder Liam Lawrence has had some harsh words for David Wheater, saying he has seen 'caravans turn quicker' than the Bolton defender.

Lawrence, who made more than 100 appearances for the Potters between 2006 and 2011, is making steps into coaching and media duties after seeing his playing career come to a close.

The 37-year-old was present at the University of Bolton Stadium on Saturday as his former club played out a goalless draw with the Trotters, and it was his pre-match comments which sparked reaction when he suggested Benik Afobe and Saido Berahino should be paired together in attack against Wheater.

"I'm quite pleased Tom Edwards has come in because Cuco Martina had a bit of a mare at Birmingham, if I can put it like that," Lawrence told BBC Radio Stoke.

"I didn't know what he was going to do with Ryan Woods and (Peter) Etebo after he brought Ryan Woods off and he's kept it as it is. I still believe that's a very good midfield.

"The surprise is obviously Afobe up front in place of Berahino. I do want to see them as a pair, especially today coming to second-bottom Bolton, who are not a great side and have only scored eight goals here.

"They have David Wheater at the back. I've seen caravans turn quicker and I would put two up top against him. If you have Afobe up, they've got to get service into him and Afobe running down the sides of Wheater all day long.

"I would have gone two up front, Berahino and Afobe and said to go and run them ragged."

Afobe played 81 minutes on his return to his former club before being replaced by Peter Crouch, while Berahino remained an unused substitute.
