Stephen Ireland has left Bolton with immediate effect, after his contract with the club was cancelled by mutual consent.

Ireland, who joined Wanderers on October 9 on a short-term deal until January, failed to make a single appearance at first-team level after injuries restricted him under-23 football.

A veteran after 13 years in the professional game, the 32-year-old has played just five times in two-and-a-half years as he continues to rediscover his previous self following a badly broken leg which was suffered whilst training with Stoke City in May 2016.

Ireland, who has also represented Manchester City, Aston Villa and Newcastle United during a successful career, could ultimately be forced into hanging up his boots, with clubs unsure on the long-term fitness of the former Republic of Ireland international.
