Bolton boss Phil Parkinson has tonight emerged as the bookies' favourite for the vacant post at Reading, who look set to miss out on first-choice target Luis Castro.

Parkinson holds legendary status at the Madejski Stadium, having made more than 400 appearances as a midfielder for the Royals between 1992 and 2003.

The 51-year-old is in the midst of another financial battle at the University of Bolton Stadium - one which has seen the Professional Footballers' Association step in with a loan which is reported to cover £400,000 (50%) of the Trotters' November salary outlay.

Saturday's defeat at Norwich City saw Parkinson take charge of Wanderers for the 126th time, a number which - alongside Owen Coyle - makes him the club's longest-tenured manager since the resignation of Sam Allardyce in April 2007.

Reports on Monday afternoon suggested Reading were closing in on the capture of Castro, who took over at Vitoria Guimaraes in May, but Portuguese outlet Record would later report the 57-year-old had opted to remain in his native homeland - where he had spent the entirety of his 20-year career.

Parkinson isn't the only name linked with the vacancy, however, with Steve Bruce, Gareth Ainsworth, Francesco Guidolin and former Watford boss Slavisa Jokanovic all said to he high on the list of potential replacements for the axed Paul Clement.
