Former Bolton defender Gretar Steinsson has been appointed as Chief European Scout at Everton.

Steinsson played 138 times for Wanderers between 2008 and 2012, scoring six goals in 138 appearances after arriving in a £3.5million transfer from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.

A departure from the Reebok Stadium following the Trotters' relegation from the Premier League, the Icelander signed a two-year deal with Turkish outfit Kayserispor but left by mutual consent at the end of just one campaign in which he suffered what would ultimately prove to be a career-ending knee injury.

Remaining in the game, Steinsson was appointed as Technical Director at Fleetwood Town in January 2015, where he would go on to become one of the most highly-regarded young scouts in European football.

After just shy of four years at Highbury Stadium, the 36-year-old has made a move to Goodison Park where he will work closely with Toffees' Director of Football Marcel Brands, who signed Steinsson during his time as manager of AZ Alkmaar in August 2005.
