Bolton have completed the signing of Stephen Ireland, who had be available as a free agent following his release by Stoke City.

Ireland, who spent time on trial with Wanderers throughout pre-season, has signed a short-term contract until January and is expected to add competition to a midfield that has severely lacked creativity in recent weeks.

After initially appearing to have missed out on the signature of the 32-year-old, Trotters boss Phil Parkinson believes Ireland - once an £8million capture for Aston Villa - admitted his delight at landing the veteran playmaker.

Speaking to bwfc.co.uk, Parkinson said: "Although he's got a bit to do in terms of match fitness, we've got a lot of games coming up and I'm sure he will make a positive contribution."
