Christian Doidge says the opportunity to join Bolton was a 'dream' and he hopes to follow in the footsteps of his Welsh compatriot Gary Speed.

Doidge, who joined Wanderers on loan from Forest Green Rovers in August, will make a permanent move to the University of Bolton Stadium when the transfer window opens in January, bringing a close to a two-year spell with a club that gave him a return of 56 goals 99 appearances across all competitions.

Speed, who played 139 times for the Trotters between 2004 and 2008, was a key figure in the teams that qualified for European football in both 2005 and 2007 and Doidge says the impact his idol left at the club is something he couldn't ignore.

"From watching Bolton in the Premier League when I was growing up, they had a lot of Welsh players and I used to like them," Doidge told "People like Gary Speed.

"It's a great club. Coming in and seeing the massive stadium, it's definitely somewhere you'd want to play your football and I can't wait.

"The manager made me feel wanted and that's important. It looks like he gives his players a lot of confidence and that's what you need when you're up front.

"I've been scoring a lot of goals in League Two and I think it's just a natural progression. I'm 26 so it was now or never and I'm just glad that I've been given an opportunity to play at a higher level.

"I didn't think I'd get the opportunity to play for Bolton Wanderers but it's down to hard work and persistence. It's been a tricky road but to finally get here is a dream."
