Gary O'Neil says he is 'grateful' to have been given the opportunity to extend his playing career at a club like Bolton.

O'Neil, now in his 20th season as a professional, joined Wanderers on a free transfer from Bristol City in August after spending much of the summer on trial at the club.

The 35-year-old has impressed in his early days with the Trotters, making six appearances for Phil Parkinson's side and O'Neil believes he is still capable of holding his own at Championship level.

"All the lads have been a credit to themselves since the start of the season," O'Neil told BWFC's official YouTube channel.

"To have started the way we have, when the group has been put together so late - people coming in on trial and loans, we've been thrown together - to get 11 points from the first six games is a fantastic return.

"I'm ok in games, it just takes me a little bit longer to recover. I just need an extra couple of days between games now I'm at the old age of 35.

"But I'm still enjoying it. I'm grateful to the gaffer for giving me a chance to play for such a big club in a tough division.

"At my age, I'm lucky to have been given another chance at this level."
