Phil Parkinson has been encouraged by Bolton's start to the season, but insists he will continue fixing flaws in order to make his players even better.

Wanderers moved up to 3rd place in the Championship on Wednesday evening after a 73rd minute goal from Will Buckley - although unofficially credited to Josh Magennis - gave them a 1-0 victory over Birmingham City at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Speaking after the game, Parkinson expressed his relief at securing a first home win of the campaign, whilst challenging his players to up their game even further ahead of the weekend visit of Sheffield United.

"It's great to get the three points," Parkinson told

"It was a tough game, we knew it would be. Birmingham are a physical team. You have to stand up to them and I felt we did that.

"It wasn't a game for the purist but sometimes things aren't like that and you've got to stand strong as a team.

"After drawing our first home game, it was important to get that first home victory and I'm so pleased we've done it.

"I'm delighted with the work ethic and spirit we've shown again, and I'm delighted with the substitutes who came on and gave us a lift when it was really needed. Substitutes are always important - especially in the Championship - and the three lads we put on gave us a lift.

"We're delighted with our start but we know how hard we've got to work to maintain that. We've got a couple of days rest before Sheffield United come to town and we can't wait for that game.

"There's going to be a terrific crowd and we've got to serve up the same again, and better. We know there are areas we've got to improve on and we'll be working towards that."
