Former Bolton Wanderers manager Jimmy McIlroy has passed away at the age of 86.

Born on October 25, 1931, McIlroy is best remembered for a playing spell at Burnley - for whom he made 497 appearances between 1950 and 1962 - where he helped them secure the Division One league title in 1960.

McIlroy won 55 caps for Northern Ireland, scoring 10 times between 1951 and 1965, and was a part of the squad that reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 1958.

At the end of a playing career which had also seen him represent both Glentoran and Stoke City, McIlroy was appointed player/manager at Oldham Athletic.

He spent three-and-a-half years in charge at Boundary Park before resigning following a heavy 4-0 defeat to Luton Town on the opening day of the 1968/69 campaign.

From there, McIlroy returned to Stoke City as assistant manager to Tony Waddington, before taking on the same position at Bolton shortly thereafter.

Following the managerial departure of Nat Lofthouse in November 1970, McIlroy was placed in charge at Burnden Park but stepped down just two games into the role after being told he would need to sell players - with the club heading for relegation from the second tier.

McIlroy's contribution to the game is recognised at Burnley's home ground of Turf Moor, where a stand has been named in his honour for the past 20 years. He was also awarded an MBE in 2011 for his services to football and charity.

Everybody at Burnden Aces and the extended Bolton Wanderers family would like to send their condolences to Jimmy's family at this difficult time.
