Ken Anderson has revealed an announcement of Adam Le Fondre's departure during Bolton's game at Leeds United was entirely his.

Supporters were left bemused on Tuesday, when Wanderers - trailing 2-0 at Elland Road at the time - went public with news that a player who had been omitted from the matchday squad had been released from his contract ahead of a proposed move to Sydney FC.

The Trotters chairman admits the timing could have been better, but says mounting speculation left him with no alternative but to inform people of the truth.

"I take full responsibility for the announcement during the game last night," Anderson told The Bolton News.

"I had noticed comments on social media and it was my intention to make sure people were not misinformed with speculation.

"Whether that decision was right or wrong I'll leave it to other people to decide. But if there is criticism to be aimed, then I think it is right it is aimed at me and not the manager or the club's staff.

"I felt by the time the game started the speculation had already begun and when I went back inside the boardroom at Leeds people were saying: 'I hear Adam Le Fondre is leaving? Is it true?'

"For someone of Adam's age it is an incredible offer and I feel it would have been very wrong of me to stand in his way.

"Phil spoke to me and I think there was every chance he (Le Fondre) would have been involved at Leeds United.

"But I took the stance that it was an opportunity of a lifetime for a player and his family, a new experience. And gave it my blessing."
