After captaining Bolton to victory at West Bromwich Albion, David Wheater thinks the club can be the Championship's surprise package this season.

With the fixture list pitting Wanderers against a side freshly relegated from the Premier League on opening day, few predicted Phil Parkinson's men to leave The Hawthorns with anything but defeat.

Debut goals from Josh Magennis and Yanic Wildschut proved the doubters wrong, however, and Wheater believes early momentum could thrust the Trotters on to further success.

"I think we'll surprise a lot of people this year," Wheater told iFollow BWFC.

"Everyone is a hard worker. There are some good footballers and there's some good...whatever I am - people who head and clear.

"It took us 12 games to get this many points last season so hopefully we can kick on now, and I don't see why we can't. These (West Brom) are one of the best teams in the league, so there's no reason why we can't do this every week.

"Even if we'd have got a point it would have been a terrific result, so to win is a massive lift for us.

"It won't mean a thing if we lose the next few games. We've got no midweek game so we'll train hard as normal and kick on, hopefully getting another victory on Saturday."
