Bolton have added academy goalkeeping coach Ben Williams to their first-team squad, ahead of their Championship opener at West Bromwich Albion.

Williams, who is available as a free agent after leaving Blackpool at the end of last season, has been assisting with Wanderers' youngsters following the departure of previous coach Ian Wilcox and featured in the recent pre-season friendly at Guiseley AFC.

Trotters boss Phil Parkinson admits involving the 35-year-old isn't the ideal situation, whilst also revealing his inclusion is a short-term fix until a backup goalkeeper - understood to be Cardiff City's Lee Camp - can be signed.

"Ian Wilcox recently left his post as our Academy goalkeeping coach to move to Manchester United Ladies' team, and Ben has come in to replace him and work with our young goalkeepers," Parkinson told

"The benefit of having Ben registered as a first team player meanwhile is that is allows us to send Jake Turner on loan which is important for his development - he can now go out and learn his trade in men's football.

"It is important that we're covered with Ben who can play that dual role at the club and he will be in the squad for tomorrow.

"We're close to bringing in another goalkeeper too - we were hoping that it would happen this morning [Friday], but it's dragged on unfortunately.

"Hopefully that will be sorted as soon as possible however as we look to continue strengthening the squad."
