Bolton are closing in on the signing of defender Marc Wilson, who is available as a free agent after leaving Sunderland.

Wilson, who has 25 caps for the Republic of Ireland, is said to have agreed terms on a switch to Wanderers and could feature in Tuesday's pre-season friendly at Guiseley AFC after completing a medical.

The 30-year-old represented Manchester United during his youth but broke into the professional game at Portsmouth where, at the age of 22, he became one of the youngest captains in their history.

Following their relegation to the Championship in 2010, Wilson completed a transfer to Stoke City.

He would go on to make 176 appearances during a six-year spell with the Potters, although a succession of serious injuries - including a broken leg - saw him drop out of contention in his latter days at the club.

A 2016 move to Bournemouth provided just three outings, while a loan spell at West Bromwich Albion in the second half of the 2016/17 campaign saw him play just four times.

Wilson joined Sunderland on a free transfer last summer following their relegation from the Premier League. He played 22 times as the Black Cats, who had been tipped for an immediate return to the top-flight, suffered a drop into League One.
