Jem Karacan has been offered a route back into football, having opened negotiations with League One side Oxford United.

Karacan, who left Bolton when his contract expired at the end of June, is available as a free agent with just over two weeks to go until the start of the new EFL campaign.

United boss Karl Robinson has gone public with his interest in the former Turkish youth international, but admits a deal will only be concluded if the 29-year-old is willing to commit.

"We've spoken to him and he has a decision to make if this is the football club that he wants," Robinson told Oxford Mail.

"He was captain at Bolton at the start of last season, he's played for Galatasaray, he's captained Reading.

"He's a very high-energy, very aggressive midfield player.

"He has a decision to make: (does he want to) wear our shirt with pride and dedicate a small part of your life to be successful for us?

"It's the same message to all the players we're trying to bring in."
