Bolton have completed the signing of Clayton Donaldson, who had been available as a free agent following his release by Sheffield United.

Donaldson, who has signed a 12-month contract with Wanderers, joined the Blades on a free transfer from Birmingham City last summer and scored five goals in his solitary campaign at Bramall Lane.

The 34-year-old progressed through the youth system at Hull City but failed to make the grade at the KCOM Stadium, spending time on loan at Harrogate Town, Scarborough and Halifax Town before joining York City in the summer of 2005.

His time with the Minstermen saw him register a return of 42 goals in 91 appearances and attracted the attention of Hibernian, for whom he signed in 2007.

After a poor spell in Scotland, Donaldson returned to the EFL a year later and would strike more than 100 times over the following six seasons at Crewe Alexandra and Brentford, respectively.

He joined Birmingham in 2014 and would net 34 times during a three-year stay at St Andrews', before spending last season serving mainly as a substitute as Sheffield United recorded a 10th-placed finish in the Championship.

Now entering the latter stages of his playing career, Donaldson feels ready to hit the ground running at Macron Stadium and believes doubts over his ability to succeed in the second-tier will push him on to succeed.

"It feels great to have the move finally signed and sealed," Donaldson told bwfc.co.uk.

"I just cannot wait to get started. I spoke to the manager before I went away on holiday and I knew straight away that Bolton Wanderers was the club for me.

"I feel like I can bring experience to the team and goals - as a striker, you want to contribute to help the side to push on and do well in the league and I'm determined to do that here at Bolton."

In addition, manager Phil Parkinson said: "We're pleased to welcome Clayton to the club. You can never have enough strikers in your squad and he is a player who has a lot of Championship experience.

"We're looking forward to working with him this year and although we still have a lot of work to do in terms of our squad building, Clayton is a very good addition to the team."
