Fernando Hierro will step up from his role of sporting director to lead Spain at the World Cup, after they dismissed manager Julen Lopetegui.

Hierro, who represented Bolton as a player between 2004 and 2005, was presented at a press conference on Wednesday, just 24 hours before the tournament begins in Russia.

The 50-year-old succeeds Lopetegui, who signed a three-year deal to become boss of Real Madrid on Tuesday, prompting the Spanish Football Federation to make the swift decision to relieve him of his duties with the national team.

Since retiring from football following his brief stint with Wanderers, Hierro has served as assistant at Real Madrid, while a solitary campaign with Real Oviedo came to an end in June 2017.

He has also held the position of sporting director with the Spain squad on two separate occasions, as they secured a spot at the World Cup as unbeaten winners of their qualification group.
