Former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Gareth Williams has passed away at the age of 76.

Born on October 30, 1941, Williams joined Wanderers in a £45,000 transfer from Cardiff City in October 1967.

He made his debut in a 2-0 win over Norwich City at Burnden Park later that month, before going on to score five goals in 32 appearances during his first season at the club.

Williams would complete a further three campaigns with the Trotters, netting 12 times in a total of 117 outings, before leaving for near neighbours Bury in 1971.

He spent two years at Gigg Lane as the Shakers competed in the fourth tier of the English game, before hanging up his boots in the summer of 1973.

Everybody at Burnden Aces and the extended Bolton Wanderers family would like to send their condolences to Gareth's family at this difficult time.
