Bolton defender Stephen Darby has taken his first steps into coaching by undertaking the training course for a UEFA B licence.

Darby, who joined Wanderers on a free transfer from Bradford City last July, endured a miserable debut campaign at Macron Stadium, making just five appearances in all competitions before dropping out of contention.

The 29-year-old, who progressed through the same Liverpool youth team as Jay Spearing, joins the former Trotters captain on the programme, which is being provided by the Professional Footballers' Association in an attempt to retain the services of current professionals beyond their playing days.

Darby has one year remaining on his contract at Bolton and is expected to hold talks over his immediate future in the coming weeks.
