Former Bolton Wanderers defender Jlloyd Samuel has passed away at the age of 37.

Born on March 29, 1981, Samuel joined Wanderers on a free transfer from Aston Villa in 2007 and spent four years at the Reebok Stadium, making 83 appearances.

A statement by the Trinidad & Tobago Football Association indicates Samuel had dropped his children at school and was returning home when his vehicle was involved in a collision and caught fire in High Legh, Cheshire, where officers pronounced him dead at the scene.

Having represented both West Ham United and Charlton Athletic at youth level, Samuel turned professional at Aston Villa, for whom he made his senior debut in a League Cup tie against Chester City in September 1999.

After nearly a decade at Villa Park, he would link up with Bolton before moving to Iranian side Esteghlal in 2011. He had looked set to retire when a two-year stint at Paykan came to an end in 2016, but was most recently turning out as player/manager of non-league side Egerton FC in 2017.

Confirming his untimely death, a statement by Cheshire Police read: "At around 7.55am police were called following reports of a collision involving a van and a Range Rover near to Costcutter on West Lane.

"Sadly the driver of the car, Jlloyd Samuel, 37, from Lymm, died at the scene.

"His next of kin have been informed and are currently being supported by specially trained officers.

"The driver of the van, a 54-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and has been taken to hospital for treatment."

Everybody at Burnden Aces and the extended Bolton Wanderers family would like to send their condolences to Jlloyd's family at this difficult time.
