David Wheater has backed Bolton to build on their final-day survival, insisting they will look to avoid another relegation fight next season.

Wheater, who hadn't scored since the final day of the 2016/17 campaign, was on target on Sunday as Wanderers came from behind to beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 at Macron Stadium and secure their status as a Championship outfit.

Speaking to OfficialBWFC on YouTube, Wheater said: "We did it last year in the last game of the season. It's better like this.

"We could've made ourselves safe a couple of weeks ago but we decided to do it in the last game again for the fans!

"The fans have always been on our side. They let us know when we don't play well but they pay their money to be allowed to do that.

"But at 2-1 down, we gave everything and even if we did lose the game I don't think they'd have booed us off.

"I think (survival) feels better than promotion. We had such a bad start and if somebody had asked if we could take it to the last game we'd have taken it.

"We've done our job and we'll be here next year trying to give it a better go."
