Bolton boss Phil Parkinson admits he took a gamble in starting Aaron Wilbraham against Nottingham Forest, but thanked supporters for their backing.

Wilbraham, somewhat of an underwhelming signing when he arrived on a free transfer from Bristol City last August, has been a subject of intense scrutiny from fans throughout the season, but his 88th-minute winner on the final day put his name in Wanderers folklore as they retained their status as a Championship outfit.

Speaking after the game, Parkinson said the decision to include the 38-year-old in his starting line-up was down to weaknesses in the Forest defence, one which would later be fully justified.

"We played Aaron Wilbraham and left Adam Le Fondre on the bench," Parkinson told BBC Radio Manchester.

"We felt it was the right decision because they struggle to defend crosses and we felt the team needed a platform to play to.

"But we also knew it could have created a negativity with the supporters.

"That was the gamble but I've got to give the supporters credit. Even though they may have been speaking with the supporter sat next to them, I didn't feel that in the ground. They really put that to one side and got behind us.

"It's great for Aaron that he's got the goal to keep us in the division."
