Bolton Wanderers' under-23 side have been crowned Professional Development League champions after beating Nottingham Forest 2-1 at the City Ground.

Wanderers, who claimed the Northern Division title in April, reached the final with a 3-1 victory against Southern Division runners-up Charlton Athletic on Tuesday, while Forest advanced as a result of a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace that same evening.

Having narrowly edged out Forest in the race for their regional league title, David Lee and Tony Kelly's side were crowned National champions on Friday evening courtesy of first-half strikes from Stephen McKenna and Dennis Politic.

Danny Preston pulled one back for the hosts with 13 minutes to play, but it was Bolton who held on to take national silverware at this level for the first time since 1995.

Bolton Wanderers U23: Aspinall, Brockbank, Lonsdale, Edwards, Mitchell, Pritchard, Politic, Earing, McKenna, King, White
Subs: Turner, Muscatt, Navarro, Jones-Griffiths, Morris
