Bolton have completed the free signing of Jan Kirchhoff on a short-term deal that will run through until the end of the season.

Kirchhoff, who has been without a club since leaving Sunderland at the end of last season, played 60 minutes on Wednesday evening as David Lee's under-23 side were 1-0 winners over Burnley at Macron Stadium.

The 27-year-old, who can operate as both a central defender or holding midfielder, could go straight into contention for Saturday's trip to Norwich City, with Karl Henry beginning a two-match suspension and Darren Pratley yet to return to full fitness following a broken leg.

Confirming his latest recruit, Trotters boss Phil Parkinson believes Kirchhoff's experience could be key as he looks to keep the club in the Championship this season.

Speaking to, Parkinson said: "Jan is a player of excellent pedigree and will be an excellent addition to the squad as we head towards the final months of the campaign."
