Bolton have handed a trial to Jan Kirchhoff, who is available as a free agent following his release by Sunderland at the end of last season.

Kirchhoff, who came through the youth system at FSV Mainz before going on to represent both Bayern Munich and Schalke, joined the Black Cats in a £750,000 transfer in January 2016 and played an instrumental part in keeping them in the Premier League during his first six months at the Stadium of Light.

His second campaign at the club wasn't quite as successful, however, with injury restricting him to just eight first-team appearances as Sunderland dropped out of the top-flight after a 10-year stay.

The 27-year-old was let go at the end of his contract and has been unattached ever since, but featured in a trial game for Wanderers on Tuesday before watching on as his potential new club faced his former employers at Macron Stadium.

With Josh Vela considered a doubt for the remainder of the season, and Darren Pratley yet to complete a comeback from a broken leg, Bolton boss Phil Parkinson is actively searching for new recruits that would bolster his squad in the final two months of the Championship schedule.
