Reading forward Joseph Mendes has revealed he was the subject of a transfer deadline day approach from Bolton.

Mendes, who has struggled for first-team football at the Madejski Stadium due to a succession of injuries, has scored three times in 20 appearances for the Royals since joining from Le Havre in July 2016.

As part of an interview where he was asked about his relationship with current manager Jaap Stam, Mendes insists he is on good terms with the Reading boss, whilst also revealing he came close to leaving the club for Macron Stadium.

"We have a good relationship both," Mendes told Onze Mondial. "We respect each other. I think he likes my attitude.

"Last year it was not always easy with injuries and competition, but every time we talked we had a good feeling.

"This year too. For example, on the last day of the transfer window my transfer to Bolton was not done. The next day he came to find me to tell me he was happy to see me."
