Adam Armstrong has returned to Newcastle United after his loan spell at Bolton came to an end, with a move to Blackburn Rovers now said to be on the cards.

Armstrong made 23 appearances during his time with Wanderers, scoring three goals, but was largely deployed on the left-hand side of midfield following an early-season tactical switch by manager Phil Parkinson, who preferred to utilise Gary Madine as a lone forward.

Parkinson had opened discussions over extending the deal until the end of the campaign, but Magpies chiefs are said to have been left unhappy with the 20-year-old's time at Macron Stadium and will instead look to find their academy graduate regular playing time as a central attacker.

After being named in the League One Team of the Season in 2015/16, when he netted 20 goals in 40 outings for Coventry City, Armstrong looks set for a return to the third-tier, with Blackburn Rovers understood to be leading the chase ahead of promotion rivals Bradford City.
