Phil Parkinson labelled Bolton's performance as 'colossus', after they began 2018 with a 1-0 victory over Hull City.

Gary Madine scored the only goal on 20 minutes at Macron Stadium - which was hosting a Wanderers game for the 500th time - as they registered back-to-back wins at Championship level for the first time since December 2014 and move out of the relegation zone in the process.

Speaking after the game, Parkinson praised the fighting spirit of his players, who had to perform despite the first-half withdrawals of both Karl Henry and Darren Pratley through injury.

"Back-to-back wins is important," Parkinson told BBC Radio Manchester.

"We said to the lads we'd got the first away win at Sheffield United - could we now go back-to-back? We've achieved that with a colossus performance.

"With what was thrown at us with the two lads in the centre of midfield coming off, I thought the lads were immense.

"Those who started on Saturday - like Josh Cullen and Filipe Morais - I was worried about playing them because of the risk of injury, but we had to throw them both on early and they made great contributions for us.

"It's a really important victory. I always talk about the spirit but I think everybody could see that with the way the lads were fighting for each other out on the pitch."
