Bolton forward Gary Madine has been released by police after being arrested on Friday following a brawl at a pub in Gateshead.

Madine, who was out with friends to watch the England v Germany international friendly, is said to have thrown drinks glasses during an altercation at The Hanlon, before allegedly punching a man in his 50s which required medical treatment and stitches.

The 27-year-old was previously convicted of two counts of assault, sentenced to 18 months in prison in October 2013, but it is understood authorities will take no further action against the player, with club chairman Ken Anderson saying disciplinary proceedings will take place in-house.

Commenting at, Anderson said: "We are aware of the situation which has been reported in the media this morning regarding Gary Madine and although we believe that no further action is being taken by the authorities, we will be looking at the matter through our own processes."

Just last week, Madine was quizzed over his recent performances, in which he suggested getting his life in order off the field was a big factor on his new-found focus on it.

Speaking to The Bolton News, he said: "I am not this big bad lad lout that people perceive me as. That's just away from football when I've had a beer in us!

"At the football club I am not a problem for anyone. I come in and work as hard as anyone. When we get on that pitch I want to win.

"That's the world we live in. There's too much said on social media. You have to remember a lot of bad things are about jealously.

"My family, and the people around me, the gaffer they know me. You guys can tell I am not a bad lad. I can be, but most of the time I am down to earth."

Madine has made 17 appearances for Wanderers across all competitions so far this season and leads the club's goalscoring charts, with four strikes to his name.
