Aston Villa will appeal against the red card shown to Neil Taylor in their 1-0 victory over Bolton on Saturday.

Taylor was dismissed in stoppage time at the end of the game for a reckless challenge on Wanderers forward Adam Le Fondre, although Villa boss Steve Bruce believes the decision was harsh.

Speaking after the game, Bruce admitted he would have had no disagreements had a yellow card been brandished and has urged The Football Association to take a second look, in a bid to reprieve a three-match ban that would otherwise follow.

"I've just looked at it again and there has been a lot of challenges similar to that if I'm being honest," Bruce told Birmingham Mail.

"It was a foul and probably a yellow card but in my opinion it's not red because he's not shown his studs.

"He's tried to kick the ball so in that respect the referee has got it wrong. It's been a tough afternoon for him.

"Plenty of challenges went awry and the game was littered with fouls like that so I hope he thinks 'let's have a look and rescind it' - it would be a yellow rather than a straight red.

"It was a difficult afternoon for him (referee Jeremy Simpson) on a quick pitch and some of the physical challenges were shuddering."
