Former Bolton captain Jay Spearing could be set to earn a route back into football, after revealing he is in training with Blackpool.

Spearing, who left Wanderers when his contract expired at the end of June, has been overlooked by clubs at Championship level - with Trotters chairman Ken Anderson revealing earlier in September that the club had moved on and would not be engaging in discussions with the graduate of the Liverpool academy.

The 28-year-old has been linked with moves to League One duo Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic throughout the course of the summer, although speculation appears to have been wide of the mark, but he has been granted the opportunity to press his claim for a deal at Bloomfield Road, having been invited to train by manager Gary Bowyer.

Bowyer was in charge at Blackburn between 2013 and 2015, during which Spearing had a loan spell at Ewood Park having been frozen out at Bolton during the second half of the 2014/15 campaign.
