Bolton Could Lose Sponsor Under Labour Proposals

Betfred may have to abandon their sponsorship of Bolton Wanderers under new proposals from Labour, providing they came to power.

The political party's deputy leader, Tom Watson, has criticised the current level of advertising for betting companies in English football - in which 22 of the 44 teams in the Premier League and Championship have their logos on adult club merchandise.

Wanderers, who have also been sponsored by 188BET and in recent years, would fall victim to those new plans and Watson, who also revealed the party would seek discussions with The FA before considering legislation, says the exposure given to bookmakers by the sport is an issue which can no longer be ignored.

"Shirt sponsorship sends out a message that football clubs don't take problem gambling among their own fans seriously enough," Watson told BBC News.

"It puts gambling brands in front of fans of all ages, not just at matches but on broadcasts and highlights packages on both commercial television and the BBC."

Betfred were announced as sponsors of Bolton in June, with the current deal set to run through until the summer of 2019.
