Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal has played down an incident with a Bolton steward, after he was sent to the stands in their Carabao Cup defeat at Macron Stadium.

Carvalhal was dismissed by referee David Webb for his part in a disagreement with his Wanderers counterpart Phil Parkinson, who was also ordered to leave the dugout, before becoming involved in a fracas with home supporters and a steward.

After being calmed by members of his backroom team, Carvalhal has apologised for his actions but insists the incident has been taken out of perspective.

"There was a foul from Barry Bannan and he (Parkinson) tried to press out of the technical area," Carvalhal told

"The fourth official didn't act in that moment. I didn't like it because he's pressured the referee and I told the fourth official that he couldn't do that.

"With emotion in the moment I was out of the technical area and I think the decision of the referee is correct.

"The steward apologised to me afterwards. It was a person of old age and I must respect older people.

"He apologised and it's okay, but he reacted very bad with me."
