Phil Parkinson thought Bolton produced a performance worthy of victory, as they beat Sheffield Wednesday to progress through to round three of the Carabao Cup.

Goals from Dorian Dervite, Adam Armstrong (pen) and Jem Karacan had Wanderers 3-0 up inside 64 minutes at Macron Stadium, but they only just sealed their progression after two late goals from Jordan Rhodes had pulled the score back to 3-2.

Speaking after the game, Parkinson felt the result would give the club a boost following a disappointing start to the campaign and he was delighted with a display which booked Wanderers' place in the third round for the first time since 2014.

"We needed a response from Saturday," Parkinson told BBC Radio Manchester.

"We spoke about going with the same system but changing the dynamics of it. The pace when we broke was great to watch.

"At 3-0 up we were very comfortable. We'd have loved it to be an easy night but let's make it exciting for everybody!

"Being hyper-critical of the referee, Dorian Dervite is in an instant in the middle of the goal which I think, nine times out of 10, is a free-kick.

"Then, Derik Osede has cramp in the middle of the pitch. Filipe Morais came over to get him a gel and the referee lets them take a free-kick before our players are back set. I've watched it and the referee may say he didn't say Fil could go off the pitch but there's a player down. Normally the referee waits until people are back in position - they've taken a quick free-kick and it's 3-2.

"I think the whole club needed a lift and we've got that with a terrific performance and we're into the next round."
