Harry Redknapp believes Phil Parkinson is an 'outstanding manager' and has backed the Bolton boss to keep them in the Championship this season.

Having been appointed as the full-time successor to Neil Lennon in June 2016, Parkinson guided Wanderers to promotion as League One runners-up in his debut season and picked up a point for the second successive away game with a draw at Redknapp's Birmingham City on Tuesday night.

In comments made before that encounter, however, Redknapp had nothing but kind words to say about his opposite number, as well as heaping praise on Bolton as a club.

"Phil Parkinson has done a great job there," Redknapp told Birmingham's official website.

"He got them promoted last year and I think he's an outstanding manager.

"Bolton are a big club - one of THE club's in football. They have great tradition and had great players over the years so I was pleased to see them get back up last year.

"From Parkinson's point-of-view, if they can consolidate this year back in this division they'll be delighted.

"He's not going to expect to get promoted, I'm sure, but he'll certainly get the best out of his players as he always does and I'm sure they'll be OK."
