Former Bolton defender Lawrie Wilson will be playing League Two football next season, after joining Port Vale.

Wilson was available as a free agent after his contract at Wanderers expired at the end of June and has signed a two-year deal at Vale Park.

The 29-year-old, who had recently been on trial at Portsmouth, made 39 appearances over a two-year spell with the Trotters, including 26 last season as they won promotion to the Championship as League One runners-up.

Wilson's drop into League Two comes somewhat as a surprise, although he does have previous success at that level after helping guide Stevenage to play-off success in 2010/11 - just 12 months after he was part of the same squad that gained promotion into the Football League.
