Sammy Ameobi has been invited to train during Bolton's short camp in Scotland and could feature in their friendly against Arbroath on Tuesday.

Ameobi is available as a free agent after his contract at Newcastle United expired on June 30 and is widely known to be a long-term target of Wanderers boss Phil Parkinson.

The 25-year-old spent the first half of last season on loan at Macron Stadium, where he scored four goals in 24 appearances, but a reported dispute over fees and salary payments with Ameobi's parent club meant the Trotters were unable to extend the deal into the second half of the campaign.

Bolton would have no such issue with the Magpies now, however, after the former England under-21 international was deemed surplus to requirements at St James' Park following their promotion to the Premier League.

Ameobi wasn't listed as one of the 24 players to have travelled to Scotland by Wanderers on Monday. Other notable absentees were the goalkeeping duo of Ben Amos and Jake Turner, although Swiss forward Haris Tabakovic was present as he looks to earn a move from Grasshopper Zurich.
