Darren Pratley has revealed he turned down the captain's armband against Peterborough United, stating Jay Spearing deserved the recognition.

With Pratley being introduced as a substitute in Sunday's victory over Posh, television cameras captured the moment Spearing offered the captaincy to his teammate, who waved a finger in return to reject the invitation.

When quizzed post-match, Pratley admitted Spearing being stripped of the responsibility last season was harsh and, having missed two-thirds of the campaign through injury, he would have deemed himself unworthy of taking credit away from a man who has guided the team in his absence.

"Jay has been captain while I've been out," Pratley told Football On 5. "To be fair, Jay got the armband taken off him last year a bit unfairly.

"He's been brilliant while I've been out. He's a captain, a leader on and off the pitch. He offered me it but he's the one who deserved to carry on being captain.

"As long as we go up, that's the main thing for us."
