Phil Parkinson has defended his decision to start Conor Wilkinson at Scunthorpe United, after Gary Madine was ruled out through injury.

Wilkinson, who joined Wanderers from Millwall in the summer of 2013, has yet to find the net in 15 senior appearances for the club, and caused a few raised eyebrows after his inclusion over both Max Clayton and Chris Long at Glanford Park.

Parkinson felt the 22-year-old's performance merited the starting role, however, and revealed the former Republic of Ireland youth international is desperate to break his Trotters duck.

"I thought Conor did alright," Parkinson told BBC Radio Manchester.

"He's another one who hasn't had much football but I felt I'd do 60-30 between him and Max and decided to go that way.

"Conor has been looking excellent in training and has done well in the under-23s.

"He could have scored - he had two great chances - and the only disappointment was in the second-half, when he could have slipped Darren Pratley in instead of going for the shot.

"He's desperate to get that goal to get everyone behind him."
